Cliffhangers weren’t always the norm. In fact, the first literary cliffhanger was within Thomas Hardy’s 1872 serial novel ‘A Pair of Blue Eyes‘ where the hero was left between publications hanging off the edge of a cliff. Thrilling for its day but par-for-the-course for us content hungry 21st century humans. Side note: Charles Dickens had been using this technique within his published stories years earlier, Hardy just gave the term a very literal representation.
